Cryptometer Design:
The instrument consists of a glass plate, half black half white as the base. Each half of this base has a scale engraved from 0-50mm along one edge starting from the division in the centre. Two glass top plates are included with each instrument and these have two metal supports at one end so that these transparent top plates rest at an angle when placed upon the black and white area of the base plate.

The top plates differ in the length of their tiny supports so that different angles are formed between the top plates and the base plate. A wedge angle constant (K) is given to each top plate. These range from the smallest angle K= .002 to K= .0035, K= .004, K= .007 and the largest K= .008, the popular constants being K= .004 and K= .008.

The Taber® Crockmeter - Model 418 provides a quick and accurate method to determine the amount of color transferred from textile materials (such as fabric, carpeting, yarn and leather) to other surfaces by rubbing. The Crockmeter has also been employed to perform rub abrasion, scuff and / or mar tests on flat specimens. Plus, it can be used to conduct smudge and smear resistance tests on images produced by a printer or copier. Regardless of specimen material, both wet and dry testing can be performed.

Originally designed to simulate the action of a human finger and forearm, the Crockmeter uses a standard pressure and rubbing motion to provide reliable and reproducible test results. Specimens are positioned on the base of the Crockmeter and held in place with the sample holder. To prevent the specimen from shifting during testing, a sandpaper pad is provided to place under the specimen. A hand crank moves a reciprocating arm a distance of approximately 100mm. The rubbing action is provided by a 16mm diameter acrylic "finger" which moves back and forth in a straight line with each complete turn of the crank. The reciprocating load arm is weighted to provide a constant 9N load on the sample at all times and a mechanical counter keeps track of completed cycles.

The TQC Automatic Cupping Tester allows to perform a cupping (Erichsen / Dent) test on coated steel panels to define the resistance of paint, varnish or related products to cracking and/or detachment from a metal substrate when subjected to gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions.

The test is either used as a “pass / fail” test by testing to a specified depth or defining the minimum depth at which a coating fails by gradually increasing the indentation.

The ISO 1520 standard requires panels to be slowly deformed at a steady rate between 0,1 mm/s and 0,3 mm/s without interruption. Especially with thicker steel panels hand-operated testers not always allow an uninterrupted deformation.

The TQC Automatic Cupping Tester is driven by a micro-step controlled electro motor which allows precise and steady deformation with 0,01 mm steps. Operation is intuitive by means of a jog-dial switch and a multi-lingual operating menu on a large illuminated display.

An integrated LED powered sample illumination system comforts examining the coating under test. To guarantee maximum visibility of all possible types of surface including high gloss, matte or colored samples the angle of the LED light can be set. Choose light from just one or all directions. The strength of the LED’s is adjustable but also the colors can be changed to achieve maximum contrast.

GRAVURE

The TABER® Multi-Finger Scratch / Mar Tester - Model 710 is used to measure the relative resistance or susceptibility of a material surface to scratching, marring, gouging, scraping, engraving and other similar physical damage not classified as ordinary wear. Based on the apparatus described in popular automotive specifications, the instrument is commonly referred to as a five-finger (five-arm) scratch & mar tester and most often used to evaluate plastics.

The Multi-Finger Scratch / Mar Tester includes a pneumatically driven, moveable platform to which the test specimen is mounted. The platform moves in a linear fashion, and is operated by a control knob for single or multiple pass testing. An electronic timer displays the rate of speed, which can be controlled by reducing or increasing air pressure.

A gantry supports five independent splined-fingers, which provide a constant, vertical load on interchangeable scratch tips. The gantry system includes a handle to raise and lower the arms. In addition, five support rests are incorporated to allow one or more arms to be moved to an upright, rest position such that the arm does not contact the specimen during testing.

Taber Multi-Finger Scratch / Mar Tester
Individual weights of varying loads mount to the top of each arm finger to exert a standard force on the surface of the test material. Each instrument includes a weight set of 2N, 3N, 4N, 5N, 6N, 7N, 10N, 15N and 20N loads. Optional weights sets are also available consisting of either 4N, 8N, 9N, 12N or 8N, 13N, 18N weights. In addition, an optional weight of 25N or Precision Weight Kit to achieve 0.6N loads are available.

Although flat specimens up to 22mm thick are normally tested, the ''free-floating'' arms fingers enable you test slightly contoured specimens provided they are rigid or adequately supported. A spring-loaded specimen holder is standard and can be mounted to the end or side of the moveable platform for greater flexibility. To mount contoured specimens, two specimen hold-down clamps are provided. An optional 5mm spacer set is available to raise the gantry to accommodate specimens that are greater than 22mm thick.

The TABER® Reciprocating Abraser (Abrader) - Model 5900 is a test apparatus similar to the instrument described in test method ISO 1518. Ideal for flat surfaces, this tester can be configured with optional attachments to evaluate the relative resistance or susceptibility of a material surface to physical damage such as wear and abrasion, rub, scratch, mar, gouge, scrape, plus others.

The Taber Reciprocating Abraser includes a counterbalanced arm which pivots on an adjustable height gantry system. The counterweight allows the user to balance the test arm, ensuring precise test load set-up regardless of the weight of the attachment. Incorporated at the end of the arm is a tool holder to which optional attachments and weights may be secured. A sliding specimen platform moves in a horizontal, reciprocating motion under the stationary tool holder.

Test parameters such as stroke length (6 - 155mm), speed (3 - 75 cycles per minute) and load (1N - 24N maximum, with included weights of 1N, 2N, 2.5N, 5N, 10N & 24N) are adjustable so optimal settings for each material can be established.

To expand test loads, optional auxiliary weights are sold individually and available as 50g, 100g, 150g, 200g, 500g, 1000g, 2000g, 2400g and 5000g. In addition, an optional weight support may be affixed to the top of the tool holder. This permits using auxiliary weight discs originally intended for Taber''s Linear Abraser 5750 (10g, 20g, 50g, 75g, 100g, 150g or 250g).

Taber Reciprocating Abraser (Abrader) 5900
The Wearaser® collet assembly comes standard with each Taber Reciprocating Abraser, along with CS-10 and H-18 Wearaser abradants. The size and shape of a pencil eraser, the Wearaser is made using the same high quality Taber abrasive media found in our Genuine Taber abrading wheels. This permits the use of equivalent abrasive materials with the Reciprocating Abraser as well as Taber''s Linear Abraser and the Taber Rotary Platform Abraser.

The standard specimen table provided with the Reciprocating Abraser is 216mm x 278mm (8.5" x 11") with drilled tapped holes to accommodate specimen clamps or optional specimen fixing plates. To evaluate most flat specimens, specimen clamps or the optional Wide Slot Fixing Plate may be suitable. For flexible materials such as textile products, the optional Specimen Fixing Plate Kit might be used. Products with a slight contour can also be secured in place using the specimen clamps provided or a custom fixture.

The Reciprocating Abraser can accommodate two additional test arm kits (sold separately), permitting up to three tests to be performed simultaneously.

With the TABER® Shear / Scratch Tester, you can evaluate resistance to shearing, scratching, gouging, marring, scraping and engraving on a variety of flat, rigid specimens. It may also be used to test the relative homogeneity of materials, the adhesive qualities of protective coatings and the effects of age on similar materials.

A removable scale beam is mounted on a pivotal shaft projecting from an adjustable gage block. An adjusting screw permits the height of the pivotal shaft to be raised or lowered, corresponding with the thickness of a test specimen up to 12.7 mm (0.5 inches). This adjustment allows the scale beam to be maintained in a level position in respect to the specimen and turntable. Designed with an integrated bearing, the scale beam can be tilted in a rest position enabling the operator to mount or remove specimens.

Taber Shear / Scratch Tester
A calibrated sliding weight is mounted on the scale beam. By changing the position of the sliding weight, the load applied by the scratch tip (shear tool) can be adjusted between 0 to 500 grams. A second calibrated weight may be attached to the end of the scale beam, thus increasing the load capacity and changing the scale to 500 - 1000 grams. Engraved graduations are marked on the scale beam representing 10 grams per division.

Operated by an on/off switch, the motorized turntable rotates at a constant speed to ensure greater accuracy in test results. The turntable rotates in a counter-clockwise direction, but with a simple conversion the turntable rotation can be reversed (for more information contact Taber).

For materials sensitive to scratching, an optional Scale Beam Modified Weight Set is available that converts the scale by 1/10 to 0 - 50 gram range. To increase the testing load from 1000 to 1500g, an optional Scale Beam Fixed Weight is available. To satisfy EN 13310 (Kitchen Sinks - Functional requirements and test methods) an optional weight that provides a 15N load is also offered.

The TABER® Linear Abraser (Abrader) - Model 5750 has been engineered to test either contoured or flat surfaces, making it ideal to evaluate finished products of all sizes. To expand the versatility of this instrument, the Linear Abraser can be configured with optional test attachments to perform different types of abrasion tests. And can be used for both wet and dry testing.

The Taber Linear Abraser incorporates a horizontal arm that reciprocates in a linear motion. Attached to the end of the arm is a precision bearing spline shaft that creates a 'free-floating' test system and permits vertical movement. The test attachments are affixed to the bottom of the spline shaft and a weight support is mounted to the top. As the horizontal arm strokes back and forth, the test system raises or lowers vertically as the test attachment follows the contours of the specimen. A laser alignment guide assists with specimen set-up to ensures the abradant travels over the desired area.

Adjustable settings enable the user to select the speed, stroke length and test load. The Linear Abraser includes six preset speed buttons, along with the ability to adjust the speed from 2 to 75 strokes per minute. Eleven stroke lengths are standard ranging from 0.2 inch to 4.0 inch. 

Taber Linear Abraser 5750
The base load of the "free-floating" test system is 350 grams and consists of the test attachment; spline shaft; and weight support. Three 250g weight discs are supplied with the instrument and optional weight discs ranging from 10 to 250 grams can be added to the weight support to increase the test load to approximately 2100 grams. Optional accessories can be also be used to decrease the load. For example, an 150mm aluminum spline shaft and plastic Wearaser Collet Kit can bring the minimum load on the sample to as low as 60 grams. Taber's Linear Abraser is programmable to 999,999 cycles, but caution must be used as the abradant may wear prior to the end of the test.
The Wearaser® collet assembly is supplied with each Taber Linear Abraser, along with CS-10 and H-18 Wearaser abradants. The size and shape of a pencil eraser, the Wearaser is made using the same high quality Taber abrasive media found in our Genuine Taber abrading wheels. The Inkometer 1100 measures the apparent tack of printing ink under conditions closely approximating the dynamic conditions of the ink-distribution system of a printing press. The testing instrument provides the highest accuracy and efficiency for research and development, quality control and process evaluation to verify, test and improve quality.

This ink tack tester measures the integrated forces involved in ink film splitting and the effects of roller speed, film thickness, temperature and solvent evaporation.

The Inkometer 1100 consists of three rollers. The center roller is a temperature controlled brass roller. The bottom roller is an oscillating rubber composition distribution roller. The top roller is a rubber composition roller attached to the measuring system which measures tack. Rollers are available for testing standard and UV inks. The brass roller temperature is controlled by circulating a coolant mixture provided by a Constant Temperature Circulator (CTC).

The tack is reported in gram-meters and represents the torque required to "work" the ink film at a known rate with predetermined film thickness and temperature.

The Inkometer 1100 multi-line display shows the temperature, tack, roller speed and test time. Tack readings can be exported to the RS-232 port, the integrated printer or to a USB flash drive. Statistical reports can be viewed directly from the display. The Inkometer provides four test methods based on ASTM D-4361 as well as five user configurable methods that are stored in non-volatile memory.
